THE CLARKE AND WARE EXPERIMENT - PRETENTIOUS

The initial limited-edition run of 'Pretentious' ( read a bit further down this page for more info) has now sold out. This edition, featuring special packaging including a pop-up cube inlay and slipcase, will not be re-pressed.

However, in its place, the following non-limited-edition release is now available:

*** PRETENTIOUS - THE CLARKE AND WARE EXPERIMENT ***

LCD STUMM 181 (note new prefix)

This edition comes in a rather more traditional digipack, and contains a booklet containing most of the artwork and sleeve notes from the original edition. The actual music on the CD, however, is exactly the same as before.

This CD is now available from Mute Bank for 10.99 UK pounds (the original edition retailed for 13.99)

THE CLARKE AND WARE EXPERIMENT - PRETENTIOUS

Produced by Vince Clarke in collaboration with Martyn Ware (Heaven 17, Human League, I Say I Say I Say), 'Pretentious' was inspired by the piece of music commissioned for the Soundscapes 3D auditorium at the National Centre for Popular Music in Sheffield (track 1, 'Music For Multiple Dimensions'). Vince and Martyn decided that they had enjoyed working together on that track so much they would put out an entire albums' worth of imaginative, experimental ambient music.

Pretentious is the first-ever album to realise the potential of 3D soundscapes, combining over 70 minutes of cinematic music and the latest in surround sound technology to create a dramatic and memorable listening experience.

The album (on CD only), is available from the all good record shops, Mute Bank , priced at £10.99 plus p+p, and the NCPM shop. The CD comes complete with a unique 3D foldout inlay with digital imagery by Martyn Ware. Catalogue number and tracklisting are as follows:

THE EIS CONVENTION - "THE CIRCUS"

Here's Jonny's report on the convention held in Nottingham, England on the 13th of Nov. 1999.

A few points about the convention:

* I'll be sending you a full transcript of the Vince and Andy video greeting / interview in the next couple of days, and we're also working on getting the clip onto the internet as a video file for everyone to download.

* At the moment, there are no plans for the I Love Saturday, In My Arms, Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me and Rain videos to be released commercially, though I daresay it may happen one day. The other clips shown (early concert footage and the Milton Keynes Bowl gig) were loaned to the EIS from private collections and are unlikely to ever be made commercially available, I'm afraid.

* Just to clarify, the unreleased tracks played at the convention were called 'Tune 5' (the vocoder one),'Twilight' (the one with the 'oh lord' chorus) and 'My Love' (the hi-nrg one).

* The charity auction raised a grand total of 4675 UK pounds for SCOPE, with the most expensive items being:

I Say I Say I Say Teapot plus 4 cups & saucers - 200

Vince's sheriff's hat from the Cowboy Concerts - 255

Vince's Mae West wig from the Phantasmagorical Entertainment - 220

12" Pop! framed gold disc for Intercord sales in Germany - 240

7" ABBA-esque framed gold disc for Intercord sales in Germany - 350

Andy's gold leotard from Wild! tour - 420

Andy's ruby red doc martens from The Innocents tour - 350

* The new 'GIVE A LITTLE RESPECT' and 'BREAK THE CHAINS OF LOVE' t-shirts and 'erasure' mugs available at the convention can now also be ordered by mail order from the EIS

Other News

I've added the EIS convention interviews with Vince and Andy to the interview section of my web site!. Check it out!!

Vince has finished two film soundtracks. One for a film called Blood and one for a film in post production called The Bullfighter. There's also an official site for this film here.

Jonny EIS has added two press releases (penned by Jonny) to his website (click on the press releases link). One for 'Pretentious' and one for 'Family Fantastic - Nice!' (very amusing!).

RECENT YAZOO RELEASES

ROBERT MARLOW - THE PETER PAN EFFECT

This album is written and sung entirely by Robert Marlow, a former bandmate of Vince Clarke's, and includes the 4 singles released on Vince and Eric Radcliffe's Reset Records label (tracks 1, 3, 8 and 11) plus 7 previously-unissued songs.

ENERGY REKORDS - ERCD 138

1. Calling All Destroyers

2. Torch Team

3. The Face Of Dorian Gray

4. Easternize

5. Life In A Film

6. The Kiss

7. That Dangerous Age

8. Claudette

9. Ambition

10. Crying For The Moon

11. I Just Want To Dance

+ MAC/PC CD-ROM WITH THE VIDEO OF 'THE FACE OF DORIAN GRAY'

All of the tracks were co-produced by Vince Clarke and Eric Radcliffe between the winter of 1982 and the summer of 1984. The tracks are all Vince-esque synthpop, and his distinctive synthesizer arrangements are very much in evidence throughout. Together with The Assembly and Paul Quinn singles, this album constitutes something of a 'missing link' in Vince's career between Yazoo and Erasure.

The CD inlay also features numerous clippings about Robert Marlow and Reset Records.

For more details on this release, check out Energy Rekords' web site. Initially only available in Sweden, you should be able to purchase this album by mail order from Hot Stuff , A Different Drum and Indietective

Info from Jonny EIS

An Erasure tribute album, entitled 'Sometimes - A Tribute To Erasure', is being released by Cleopatra Records on the 18th of May in the US. It you can't get hold of it in your area it can be ordered from CDNow, priced $12.99 and according to Cleopatra it will also be made available to EIS members at a "very good price".

An Abba 25th Anniversary tribute album has just been released in the US featuring Erasure's version of 'Take A Chance On Me'. More details of that can be found at CDNow

The Rocktropolis article about Vince's secret dance project with Tori Amos, the B-52's etc. is almost entirely inaccurate, so I've removed it from this page.Vince has contributed to a disco/funk album by a group called Family Fantastic. This could be what the article was referring to...except it does not feature Tori Amos or The B52s, and it is not a solo project...so perhaps not then. Anyway, it features former Erasure backing singers Val and Emma, and it'll be released later this year.

Vince has worked with Martyn Ware ( Heaven 17, and producer of I Say I Say I Say ) on a 10 minute piece of music for the National Centre For Popular Music , a sort of pop music museum that was opened in Sheffield, England on the 1st of March. The piece is being aired in a 200 seater, 16 speaker, in-the-round auditorium with 3-D surround sound ( wowzers!! ).

AMG have recently reissued the Vince Clarke - 'Lucky Bastard' sample CD, which includes all the 200+ specially created synth loops, fx and drums from the original. Many of the sounds will be familiar from the Chorus album, ABBA-esque and the Phantasmagorical Entertainment tour. The reissue also features different artwork, not totally unlike the EIS 'Buried Treasure' release...

'Lucky Bastard' is now available in two CD-ROM editions; one presenting the samples in Audio / WAV formats for 20 UK pounds, and one presenting the samples in REX / WAV / AIFF / Audio formats for 30 UK pounds. Note that due to space limitations, not all of the audio files are also included as data files.

'Lucky Bastard' can be ordered from AMG's web page or by phone (+44 (0)1252 717 333) or fax (+44 (0)1252 737044). You should leave your name, address, phone/fax number and your credit card number with expiry date. You can also pay by postal order or cheque (payable to 'AMG' in UK pounds sterling) at: AMG, PO Box 67, Farnham, Surrey GU9 8YR, UK.

This information is from the EIS.

On December the 28th '98 Radio1 ( Britain's biggest pop station ), had their annual all time Top 100 favourite songs ( voted for by listeners ) and Erasure appeared at number 39 with 'Sometimes'!.

The Tiny Tour video is now available to order through the Mute Bank. Go to Mute's Erasure page for full details of how to order it. It also says here that the band are currently writing new material, due for release in the near future. Hazaah!!
