'Ask Erasure' Updated - Read This!

The 'Ask Erasure' feature has been updated with Vince's replies to your questions.

There are some *very* exciting responses to questions about Erasure's next studio album (so much so I couldn't wait until Friday to put the answers up!), such as what technologies Vince is planning on using, and the albums general direction.

Remember questions can be submitted via the 'Contact' section of the website:

"Abba's All Time Greatest Hits" ITV1 9pm 20 Dec

Well the description of the programme is rather odd:

"20 of the band's best-loved songs are analysed using new technology that assesses a track's hit potential, to create a scientific chart of their greatest hits."

However it is supposed to include an interview with Andy Bell.

As well as the UK, ITV1 is available across continiental Europe via the Astra 2D satellite at 28.2° East, however a large dish will be required as the transmissions are tightly focussed on the UK.

The New Erasure Album: "Union Street"

Erasure's eagerly anticipated acoustic album "Union Street" is to be released in the UK on the 3rd April 2006.

Named after the recording studio in Brooklyn where it was recorded, the album features a collection of the bands previously released songs, reinterpreted in an acoustic / country & western style.

Andy Bell revealed his thoughts about the album in an interview last year:

"I said a few years back (that) I would love to do a Country & Western album and this is kind of a half-half. It's done in the country style on some tracks and we got violins, cellos, all different kinds of instruments and it was really a pleasure to do it and rediscover some of the old songs that we thought could have been singles that never were.

It's just really different singing with acoustic instruments than singing with synthesisers. I think it's some of the best singing that I've ever done..." []

The track listing of Union Street is as follows:

1 Boy

2 Piano Song

3 Stay With Me

4 Spiralling

5 Home

6 Tenderest Moments

7 Alien

8 Blues Away

9 How Many Times

10 Love Affair

11 Rock Me Gently

International release dates of the album are tbc.

The band are also planning a tour after the release of this album.

Star! TV

At 9pm on the 1st December, the Canadian TV channel 'Star! The Entertainment Information Station' will be showing 'Fashion Cares 2005: Bollywood Cowboy, featuring performances by Jann Arden, Feist, Erasure and many more.

Erasure Contributes to Celebrity Auction honoring World AIDS Day

BID 2 BEAT AIDS begins December 1, 2005 to benefit LIFEbeat

Celebrity-obsessed fans will have a field day come December 1, 2005 (World AIDS Day) when bidding begins on eBay for BID 2 BEAT AIDS, an auction featuring hundreds of rare autographed items from stars in music, film, theatre and television. Proceeds benefit LIFEbeat, the Music Industry Fights AIDS. Sponsors include MTV, Borders Books & Music, Sirius Satellite Radio, Yahoo! Music, Vespa and Chan Luu.

Erasure were among the first stars to contribute to the auction, and their fans will be thrilled to see several different signed items in the auction. All of these items were autographed in person by Andy Bell and Vince Clarke: an Irving Plaza concert poster, a Nightbird promo poster, a rare poster advertising an in-store appearance, the Nightbird CD, the Breathe CD single, and the Hits DVD! There is also a signed copy of a New York Post concert review.

Image of signed DVD at

Always dreamed of owning the original artwork and paste-up of the cover of Joni Mitchell’s iconic album “Court and Spark?” Want to tool around town on a 2006 Vespa LX-50, signed by stars including Kanye West in the lobby of Sirius Satellite Radio? The auction is filled with these one-of-a-kind items and many others that will help you to live out your celebrity fantasies --- and at the same time, support AIDS/HIV programs that reach countless people nationwide. (A portion of the money is earmarked to help rebuild AIDS related services in the devastated Gulf Coast region.) The auction start date, December 1, coincides with the commemoration of World AIDS Day and bidding will run through December 10.

Every item comes with a certificate of authenticity, and was obtained directly from the performers, their agents, their labels, their studios, or other professionals in the industry. Bidders can be assured that they’re getting the real deal!

BID 2 BEAT AIDS will kick off on eBay on December 1, 2005 at 3:00 PM time EST (noon PST), and will run through the same time December 10. You can do a search for LIFEBEAT or BID 2 BEAT AIDS. The seller name is Bid2BeatAIDS.

The Erasure Show DVD

UPDATE: To view the hidden extra on your DVD player, go to the bonus menu, highlight the arrow, press left, down, up, left and press ok/enter. This info is written on the side of the EIS DVD slipcase.

If you're having difficulty finding the hidden extra on the DVD, try using Windows Media Player to view it. If you don't know where it is yet, go to the bonus section and click the leaf in the bottom row, 3rd from the left. I have no idea how to do that using a DVD player but try clicking different arrow keys to highlight it. Personally, I didn't have much success!. Nor did I have any luck clicking the leaf using PowerDVD on my PC, but Windows media player worked just fine. It's only a picture gallery and the concert playing in the background, but it's still nice to find it, isn't it?!. Download Windows media player here if you don't have it.

Additional Andy Dates

Two additional dates have been added for Andy's DJ tour - Los Angeles and New York.

See for full details.

Vince's Head Gear - Competition Results

This was the question:

Q: The first article of this EIS Newsletter (giving details of the DVD) mentions six Erasure songs that was performed during the Erasure Show.

What are the six songs that are mentioned? (hint - one of them is hidden).

And the answer:

A: Sometimes.

Here is how you get the answer:

Clue 1) "...mentions six Erasure songs" - six songs have been mentioned - therefore the answer is the title of an actual song.

Clue 2) "...performed during the Erasure Show" - that should have narrowed it down quite a lot. The set lists from many of the Erasure Shows are available on the EIS site, as well as the track listing of the Erasure Show DVD.

Clue 3) "one of them is hidden" - so the song title is hidden. Is it the DVD Easter Egg, as that was mentioned? (See clue 4).

Clue 4) "It will be interesting to read your reviews of the DVD..."- this was a link to the EIS Forum where people have revealed what the DVD Easter Egg actually is, and reading these posts one can determine that it is not a song. Plus I wouldn't expect you to purchase a DVD in order to enter a competition.

Therefore the name must be mentioned within the EIS Newsletter itself. A common answer was "Treasure" (hidden within the URL of the E-Card) however that wasn't performed on the tour (see clue 2), and ignores the instructions within the question (see clue 5).

Clue 5) "first article of this EIS Newsletter mentions six Erasure songs" - this is an explicit instruction drawing your attention to the first nine paragraphs of the newsletter, and that the song is mentioned within that.

Clue 6) "Start of..." - a slightly obscure clue, but the opening sentence hints to look at the start / beginning.

Taking all the above into account, if you take the beginning letter that started each paragraph:

It spells out "Sometimes".

Congratulations to Peter Rohde from Denmark who wins Vince's head gear and the rather odd polystyrene head it is kept on!

Goldfrapp - New Single Out Now

For those of you that purchased Goldfrapp's last single "Ooh La La" (which Andy & Manhattan Clique provided a mix for) you may be interested to know that Goldfrapp have a new single out in the UK this week titled "Number 1".

It's available from the usual high street music stores and online via:

A Dirty Little Business DVD

I received this email from Len Richmond, writer and director of 'A Dirty Little Business'.

'Well, I too am an Erasure fan, and to my amazement I managed to talk Vince Clark into writing an original musical score for my independent film, "A Dirty Little Business". Then Andy Bell agreed to make his film debut in the movie (doing a cameo as a porno director). I just wanted to let all their fans know that, at long last, the film is out on DVD in America. It's available online from SamGoody, BestBuy, Amazon, and all the usual suspects. Vince wrote a truly great score, Check it out!'.

Competition Time

As you know, Andy, Chris and Philip will be celebrating the release of 'Electric Blue' with a special gig at London's Electrogogo club night at Madam JoJos in Soho on Thursday 6th October.

This will be their second ever live show (they kick off in Berlin next weekend) and they'll be playing songs from the album which is released on 3rd October. Claudia Brucken will be also performing a couple of tracks with them. DJs on the night include Mark Moore from S-Express, and the fantastic Knights will be supporting them.

The event is nearly sold out (see link below to buy tickets online), so how about a competition where the first is a pair of tickets for the event, plus a meet & greet with Andy, Chris and Philip?

Thought you might quite like that!

The Erasure Show - Live in Cologne Artwork

The artwork for the forthcoming "The Erasure Show - Live in Cologne" is available within the EIS News section.

The UK release date is set for the 31st October 2005.

I've enquired about a North American (NTSC) release and was told such a release "is likely" but I have no further information regarding this.

The releases page has had some minor updates regarding this DVD, with info about audio options / 16x9 ratios / subtitle languages etc.

BTW for those in the UK & Ireland that haven't registered their postal address to receive the *possible* slipcase for the 'Erasure Show' DVD - you're running out of time. If a slipcase is produced then the cut off time for registrations is approaching.

Important: there does need to be a sufficient quantity of registrations to make it worth while for Mute UK to produce these promotional items.

For those outside UK & Ireland, then spare slipcases are provided free with any EIS merchandise order (to cover p&p) if requested.

Andy's New Single - Released Monday (UK)

Forthcoming Charity Auction

Earlier this week, the stage costumes from "The Erasure Show" were delivered to the EIS office. After I've had chance to try them on plus have checked with the band which items they wish to keep, the remaining items will be auctioned off with the proceeds going for charity.

The auction will be held online - I'm currently testing a rather fine auction add on for the EIS Forum which is probably how this is going to work. Therefore if you wish to participate in the auction then you will need an EIS Forum account.

If you are having EIS Forum login problems / have forgotten your EIS Forum password etc can you contact me ASAP (via the Contact section of the web site) so that any issues can be sorted in plenty of time. If you don't have an account then sign up now, again so any issues can be sorted out early.

Further details in a few weeks.

Please submit questions *only* via the Contact section of the web site (and pick 'Ask Erasure' as the subject).

NOTE: Sorry but any questions that have previously been answered before, or are dealt with in the "Ear To The Ground" section (see above) will be deleted - as well as "when are you next going to perform in _______" type of questions, as the response will always be "we don't know", which won't make for very exciting reading.

Have a great weekend!

Important - UK & Ireland Erasure Postal Database

Mute UK's marketing department send out slipcases to promote forthcoming releases of Erasure singles to those addresses which are held on the Erasure postal database. This database is comprised of the information that is sent in from returned reply cards, addresses submitted via the EIS etc.

As you can imagine, after several years the information contained within this database has gotten stale, therefore it is being wiped and recreated.

If you are resident within the UK or Ireland and wish to continue to receive whatever promotional items that Mute send out, it is important that you add you details to this new database ASAP (there is the possibility of a slipcase being produced for the forthcoming Erasure Show DVD).

You may enter you address details here: EIS:

EIS Web Updates

There have been several updates to the EIS website over the past few days:

- Photo Gallery -

A selection of pictures from the recent BBC Radio 2 Blackpool event has been added to the fan gallery, as well as additional photos from 'The Erasure Show'.

- Live Appearances -

The 'Tour' section has been replaced with a new section entitled 'Live'. Okay not a huge difference, but it does now list the forthcoming live appearances by Andy.

- Ear To The Ground -

This is a new section that summarises all currently known information regarding future Erasure releases / tours that the band have revealed in various interviews etc.

*Important* I should point out that just because something is listed on this page doesn't mean that it is *actually* going to happen (unless otherwise noted) - projects / ideas / plans change all the time. It will be interesting to look back at this page in 12 months and see which of these projects actually happened!

In a week or two, will be running a competition to win signed promo's etc. To be eligible to enter you must be signed up to receive the email newsletter.

'I Thought It Was You' - Sound Clip

A clip of 'I Thought It Was You', the eagerly anticipated song that features Andy's duet with Jake Shears (from The Scissor Sisters) has been added to the 'Music' section.

BBC Radio 2

Make sure that you tune into BBC Radio 2 between 20:30 and 21:30 on the 2nd September to hear Andy perform live at The Blackpool Illuminations event.

BBC Radio 2 is available live via DAB digital radio, the Internet, Sky Digital, Digital Cable and Freeview. It is also possible to listen to BBC Radio 2 shows for 7 days after broadcast via the BBC Radio 2 website.

Pre-ordering 'Crazy' / 'Electric Blue'

With Andy's debut solo single and album nearing release, I would like to highlight the importance of pre-ordering and first week purchasing.

Those of you that receive the official Erasure (EIS) email newsletter will be familiar with such promptings - however the importance of a successful chart position for this new project can not be overstated. I realise it may seem obvious, however high chart placements *do* encourage further singles and subsequent live / TV appearances, something that all us fans appreciate and want more of!

So if you are able to, pre-order the album and singles in your local store to demonstrate the demand to retailers, and if you'll be buying the single and / or album then doing so in the first week of release would be great!

Digimpro Remix Competition Winner

These ten mixes were subsequently forwarded onto Erasure, who have chosen a final overall winner!

And that winner is: Glynns Smash Mix by Glynn Jaine, who will win an iPod and a complete set of Erasure Live Here Now CDs. The other nine finalists will each receive a choice of three Live Here Now CDs each.

Andy Bell Goldfrapp Mix Out Now

Out in UK stores (2xCD, 1DVD) and as a digital download is 'Ooh La La', the brand new single from Goldfrapp.

Andy Bell (with a little help from Manhattan Clique) has provided a rather fine mix of the single, titled 'Ooh La La - When Andy Bell Met Manhattan Clique Mix', complete with additional vocals (provided by Andy.)

'Ooh La La - When Andy Bell Met Manhattan Clique Mix' is available on the DVD single, as well as iTunes (UK) and for the digital download.

*Exclusive* Message From Andy

I recently recorded a (very) brief message from Andy, where he talks about 'Electric Blue' and Erasure's acoustic album.

The clip is available in Windows Media (broadband) here

Real Media and dial up versions of this clip, plus transcript will be added to the EIS site by Monday.

Apologies for the poor sound quality - we were trying to be quiet so as not to disturb the photographer in the studio at the time - plus it's only about the third time I'm used a camcorder (apart from many years ago - when I used to reenact scenes from 'Doctor Who' but it's probably best not to mention that. Oops!)

Thanks to Janet btw, who was asking the questions off camera.

Ooh La La - Goldfrapp

Out in stores on Monday (2xCD, 1DVD) and available *now* as a digital download is 'Ooh La La', the brand new single from Goldfrapp.

Why is this being mentioned on an EIS newsletter?

Well Andy Bell (with a little help from Manhattan Clique) has provided a rather fine mix of the single, titled 'Ooh La La - When Andy Bell Met Manhattan Clique Mix'.

Of particular note is the additional vocals provided by Andy, which certainly enhance the mix in my eyes (well ears!)

'Ooh La La - When Andy Bell Met Manhattan Clique Mix' is available on the DVD single, as well as iTunes (UK) and for the digital download.

Digimpro - Mac Issues

I understand that Mac users have been having problems accessing the 'Here I Go Impossible Again' .dl file on the recent single (LCDMUTE334).

If you are one of these Mac users, could you e-mail me and let me know?

The Mac version of the Digimpro software is available for download from the Digimpro site:

'Here I Go Impossible Again / All This Time'

I'm sure Erasure fans in the US don't need reminding that the third single from 'Nightbird' was released on the 26th July. I quite liked the following quote from Billboard: "Another fresh, inspired and yes signature composition that will bring grins."

iPod Competition

The voting for the remix competition will finish at the end of Monday 8th August. EIS Forum registrations will be enabled as soon as voting has concluded.

Looking at the stats, the mixes have been downloaded / streamed 25,000+ times so far.

Congratulations to those that have won each of the first four groups, group number five voting is taking place now.

EIS Web Site Updates

- Gallery -

Some old press photos from the 'Innocents', 'Chorus' and 'Tiny Tour' era have been added to the gallery.

- Fan Mixes -

A few weeks ago the 'Fan Mixes' section was updated with several more mixes. Several more are due to be added in a week or two, and when that occurs further MP3's of the older mixes will be removed.

- Discography -

The discography section is *finally* being revamped. Currently the album section has had details of (some) non-UK releases added, as well as direct links to iTunes and MSN Music for many of the tracks. More updates to come.

- Links -

Not too exciting, but several links to photographers and fan sites have been added to the links section.

Andy Bell Signs New Record Deal

Erasure frontman Andy Bell has signed a worldwide solo recording deal with Sanctuary Records, and announced details of his debut album, which will be released on 3rd October 2005, and entitled 'Electric Blue'.

The first single release will be 'Crazy', released on September 26th. The single will come on three formats, with club remixes from Erasure partner Vince Clarke, plus Cicada, MHC and King Roc. It will also feature additional non-album tracks and the video, which is being made by the award-winning Al + Al.

The album features 14 brand new tracks, including two duets, with Claudia Brucken (of Propaganda and Act) and Jake Shears (of Scissor Sisters), and encompasses a variety of musical genres.

'Electric Blue' was co-written and recorded throughout 2004 and 2005 with Manhattan Clique (Philip Larsen & Chris Smith) who have worked with Erasure, Moby, The B-52's, Stereophonics and Goldfrapp in recent months.

Live dates are being planned for late 2005/early 2006, and the trio are also planning a series of PA's and DJ gigs around album release.

As one half of Erasure, Andy Bell has sold in excess of 20 million records worldwide, and chalked up over 30 hit singles. Latest album 'Nightbird' received huge critical acclaim, as did a recent sold-out European and North American tour.
